Cup win for Firsts
Knebworth made hard work of Tring Town in the first round of the Herts Senior Centenary Trophy. Corehard man of the match: Kadeem Gutzmore
The Ks secured passage to the second round courtesy of Tom Oram's second goal of the season.
The visitors were quick out of the blocks and forced a corner in the opening minute; Oram collected that deep inside the Tring box and rifled goalwards but Meager collected to avoid a disastrous start for the South Midlands division two side. Five minutes later former Kimpton Rovers forward Ashley Wadhams almost gave the hosts the lead but Sam Harte was on hand to clear off the line. Knebworth dominated long spells of the first half but never really tested Meager in the Tring goal. Kadeem Gutzmore served up a spectacular display of wing wizardry and the ball flashed across the face of goal on several occasions but the half ended goalless.
The Ks maintained the pressure after the interval and skipper Ryan Ellis sent a header just over the target early on. Seven minutes into the half George Taylor cut in from the left and curled a delightful right-footed effort on to the foot of the upright, the ball rebounded kindly for Tom Oram to lash home from ten yards out and settle some of the Knebworth nerves that were building. But the opening goal injected urgency into the home side and they began a bright spell which peaked with a fine low save by Adam Burnett from Connelly's 20-yard drive. The closing stages were tense and the Ks had to dig deep to ensure there was no late slip up with the threat of penalties at the end of normal time.
