Cup win for First team
Knebworth progress to the last 8 of the Aubrey Cup. Raja Tandoori man of the match: Kieran Klimek
Three first half goals put the Ks in a seemingly unassailable lead but they had to weather an Evergreen resurgence in the second half to secure a quarter final tie with Ware Sports.
The hosts were dominant from the kick off and limited Evergreen to a handful of breaks in the opening 45 minutes. Knebworth were kept at bay until the 13th minute when Kieran Klimek broke the deadlock, latching on to Sam Harte's cross and nudging the ball past the advancing Dan Horton and into the net. The Ks maintained the pressure and Kadeem Gutzmore doubled the advantage on 31 minutes, rifling into the top corner from ten yards out after neat play by Allan Taitt and Klimek. Almost immediately from the restart, some sloppy play by Evergreen on the edge of their own box allowed Liam Errington to steal possession and he coolly clipped the ball over a stranded Horton for 3-0. It should've been 4-0 just before the break as Klimek broke through the visitors' backline and drove in from the left of the goal, opting to shoot rather than square for Gutzmore to slot into the unguarded net, and rattled the upright.
The home faithful were anticipating a flood of Knebworth goals in the second half but instead they saw the Ks under sustained pressure from Evergreen. The visitors' strong start was rewarded with a goal just five minutes into the half as Hamze Ali jinxed inside from the left and curled the ball past Adam Burnett. The hosts got back in to the game as the half wore on and were denied a penalty claim with 15 minutes left. Seven minutes from time the Ks did win a penalty as Klimek was clattered and Ryan Ellis slotted the ball into the net to kill off any hope Evergreen had.
