Park not good enough
Knebworth Park second eleven struggled against high flyers Luton Town & Indians losing by 7 wickets on a flat deck.
Things started well for Knebworth, with skipper Steve Gregory winning the toss and choosing to bat first. On the pitch, things continued to go well for Park with Steve Gregory and Dean Thomas putting pressure on the fielders with some excellent quick singles to keep the scoreboard ticking. For only the second time this year, Knebworth passed 50 without having lost a wicket. Thomas brought up his personal 50 but fell shortly after for 56 taking a single after Gregory had driven the ball back at the bowler.
This brought Stuart Burford to the crease, who decided to take it to the bowlers but fell taking one too many swings being caught at cow corner. This approach seemed to be infectious as the middle order came in to play shots without having a base. At the other end, Gregory continued batting, increasing his run rate after his crossed the half century mark. James Leather and Parth Patel chipped in with valuable runs until disaster struck. Gregory, going for a quick single to get the strike for the next over, was run out for 99, unaware of his score due to the malfunctioning scoreboard at the Park. Knebworth's total reached 239 off of their overs, a total that was thought to be competitive at the time, even though on the lower end of their aim.
After tea, Knebworth came out hoping for early in roads to not allow the Luton batsman to settle on the batsman friendly pitch. This didn't happen, as openers Tom Elliot and Michael Fisher failed to find rhythm or consistency. Patel finally got the breakthrough, unfortunately the total was on 156 at the time, with both openers looking towards three figures. It was a sharp catch by Leather in the slips. Unfortunately for Park, the bowling continued to be below par, with Knebworth trying a few options to try and get a wicket. The second and third finally came with Luton approaching the finishing line as Fisher was brought back on. Luton reached the total three wickets down with Jeremy Page reaching his hundred just before, pacing his innings perfectly.
All in all, Knebworth performed below par against promotion chasing Luton but picked up what could be a valuable 13 points in the fight to stay in Division 2.
