Hampton upset local rivals Knowle in a typical derby match on Saturday

Hampton upset local rivals Knowle in a typical derby match on Saturday.

The home side took an early lead in the 6th minute when Knowle failed to clear a corner and Gareth Parfitt headed home a loose ball. Knowle responded well and in the 12th minute the home keeper made two excellent saves at close quarters to deny Kyle Jaynes and Ben Ellicott. Then 5 minutes later Callum Ingram fired over from 12 yards after controlling the ball on his chest from a corner. The home keeper then denied Jack Moss as his free kick from 25 yards was heading for the top corner. However, Knowle had to rely on two saves from Conal Dowling in the Knowle game to keep the deficit to one gaol and them in the game.

Knowle should have got back on level terms within 3 minutes of the restart as the home keeper saw Dowling's long clearance to bounce over his head and Jaynes should have tapped in from close range as he followed in but hit the bar instead. Nathan Corry then pushed a shot wide of the right hand post after cutting in off the left flank. Torryn Connolly found space in the box in the 70th minute but could only hit his shot straight at the home keeper. Connolly also cut into the area from the right but his shot went wide of the left hand upright. Having used all 3 subs in search of an equaliser Knowle were reduced to 10 men when left back Jordan Mellon pulled up injured and then substitute Troy Smith also got injured in the latter stages and the 9 fit men were unable to create another decent chance.

The win moves Hampton off the foot of the table but dents Knowle's promotion ambitions who next face Fairfield Villa at Hampton Road next Saturday (2pm ko)..
