Knutsford Hockey Club

Knutsford 3 : 1 Neston South Wirral.

by Steve Hope

Knutsford 3s maintain their 100% home record with another victory, this time defeating Neston (the one time Champions of Europe).

Knutsfords 3rd XI took on Nestons 6s at the fortress which is Westfield Drive and won again. With 2 away games between now and Xmas, Knutsfords 3s have won every home game since the start of the season.

Big clubs like Neston have plenty of depth and they added some pacy youth to their expected contingent of vets. That said Knutsford barely gave them a touch for 15 minutes by retaining possession and attacking down the right at every opportunity. Neston finally got into the Knutsford D, won a short corner and then scored via a slip to the left.

1-0 to Neston against the run of play.

Neston then held the ball themselves for 10 minutes, and put pressure on the rolling defensive unit of Simon Deakin, Andy Lynes, Chris Howarth, Simon Crabtree & Steve Hope. On 30 minutes the midfield 3 of Karl Stanier, Dave Rees & Knutsford High Schools Ollie Lasham then worked the ball into the D, Henry Pass created space and Paul Howarth scored from 5 yards.

1-1 at half time.

Neston then rejigged their line up; placing their 5 high school lads across the midfield, trying to swamp the park with runners onto the ball and neat triangular passes. Knutsford had to work hard in defence, and put into practice some of coach Simon Trenbriths Tuesday night training ground drills and they didn't let Neston through.

It then got even better as Stanier drag flicked the ball into the top corner from left of the D.

2-1 and Nestons heads were nearly down.

The impressive Paul Howarth at number 9 found space all game where there didn't seem any, and with 5 minutes to go killed the game off by skilfully breaking away from his marker, convinced the keeper to go down early and casually lifted the ball over the prostate GK and into the net.

3-1 Knutsford.

Next Saturday our heroes travel to Lymm who will want to avenge their defeat last month.

MoM Paul Howarth, looking a class act with his bak to goal, and a brace to boot today.

DoD. Nil of note.
