Top of The League Macclesfield host Knutsford.

Knutsford travelled to Macclesfield to take on a team that are top of the league. Could this team stand in the way of Knutsford’s newly found form?!?

Skipper Ollie Berkin saw the return of his inflamed disk after playing the day before and had to coach from the side lines. A pre game team talk did the job of getting the team focused and confident that Macclesfield were not going to run a muck.

A regigged team from yesterday due to “other commitments” saw the return of 3rd team legend Karlos Stanners to bolster the defence. A welcome return to Will Hewins and Niall Robertson saw some much needed youth on the bench to swap around with the weary legs from yesterday.

Knutsfords formation allowed them to be well balanced they were able to rebuff the Macclesfield few breaks in Knutsford dominating first half performance. The midfield and attack continually put the pressure on Macclesfield but with no avail. 4 short corner routines went by but Macclesfield’s Keeper was on task and he was able to keep the score line
0-0 as both teams re grouped at half time.

Knutsford, pleased with their performance, took pleasure in the idea of holding the league leaders to a draw in the first half but they wanted more. A 6 point weekend was the stuff dreams were made of and as they changed ends Keeper Paul Adams reminded the lads that the sun was now in Macclesfield’s eyes, a great moral booster. The formation continued to be strong and it was only a matter of time before Knutsford’s efforts would be cashed in.

David Hickson received the ball from a sting of silky passes through the midfield from Chris Drake, Will Hewins and Nick Pedlow, and drove towards the baseline battling past several Macclesfield players. He then looked up and passed the ball to Richard Jones who slipped the ball in to the back of the goal to take the lead.

Macclesfield’s heads dropped and they became sloppy and frustrated. This only gave Knutsford more confidence and attack after attack built against Macclesfield’s attempts to disrupt the flow of play with their skirmishes around the Knutsford D. with 15 mins to go Knutsford secured a short corner and a well places drag flick was saved by Macclesfield’s keeper only to see the ball land in front of David Hickson who after assisting the first saw fit to set up George Narin on the back post to make it 2-0 to Knutsford.

The final 10 minutes saw Macclesfield attempt to try and turn the game but Knutsford put a solid press on and batted away wave after wave of Macclesfield sloppy attacks. The clock ticked on and at the final whistle a roar of victory could be hear back in Knutsford after the black Knights took a top flight scalp. Man of the Match Ben Cashmore was heard saying that was the toughest game he has ever played but he enjoyed it nevertheless. The final compliment came from one o the umpires who thought the performance Knutsford gave was that of the second place team in the league, Skipper Ollie Berkin took great pride in correcting her and saying “nope we are currently in 8th place”.

Well done all involve in two great wins this weekend we have found that playing as a team for the team brings the results. Truly epic performances from one and all…
