LAMPETER V DUNVANT SAT 14TH JANUARY 2012

Lampeter suffered another home defeat on Saturday and visitors Dunvant completed the double over their Ceredigion rivals.

The win means Dunvant have now moved to second spot in the league but still find themselves chasing clear leaders Haverfordwest whose only defeat of the season came at North Road and this happened to be the last time the Maroons played at home.

The visitors turned up with their usual large pack and a very good mixture of youth and experience in their line up.Lampeter on the other hand are now having to call on all of their reserves with brothers Joe and Wayne Thomas making a welcome return to the fold.

Unfortunately by the end of this game, the already lengthy injury list had got longer, with Prop Rob Morgan going to hospital with a serious looking injury and both Geraint Thomas and Centre Brynmor Jones also leaving the field with knocks.

In fact the side which took the field last Saturday showed no resemblance to the side which beat Dunvant at home last season with no fewer than twelve different faces on view to that of last year such has been the dramatic turn of events at North Road this season.

The Swansea based side started strongly and they took the lead as early as the second minute, full back Adam Williams slotting over a penalty from close range.

This was soon extended when the impressive flanker Oscar Savage charged over from ten meters and Williams converted.

Another penalty after twenty minutes for coming in on the side was again converted by Williams and when he kicked his third penalty after only twenty minutes of play, there was only one side in this game, with Lampeter having to call on all of their character and pride to avoid a humiliating defeat.

With Joe Thomas having come on for the injured Brynmor Jones, there was more purpose and drive to the Lampeter play and following a scintillating run by full back Aled Morgan, back row Geraint Thomas took an inside pass to cross for a try which Captain Huw Thomas converted.

With the game fast approaching the interval, the home side were firmly on the front foot and with Dunvant being reduced to fourteen men following a red card to their hooker for an illegal tackle, the crowd sensed that another score just before the break would bring Lampeter right back in to the game.

Despite all of their efforts they could not break down a stubborn and well drilled defence and the visitors held out to the break with a 16-7 lead.

After a rallying cry from their Coach at the Interval, Dunvant came out looking stronger than ever and with five minutes of the restart, their bulkier pack were awarded a penalty try by match official Mathew Davies which Williams converted.

Lampeters pack was made weaker by the loss of both Morgan and Thomas and it was already buckling against the heavier one of the visitors and with their other set piece, the lineouts causing concern, most resulting penalties given to them were taken with tap penalties in order to keep possession.

They failed however to reproduce their form they showed just before the break despite coming close in the final quarter, but again, the visitors defence was superb, especially as they were one man down.

Williams slotted over his fourth penalty kick and with almost the last move of the match, second row Jaeb Botes scored Dunvants third try to give them a comfortable win by 31-7.

Lampeter must regroup quickly or it could prove to be a very difficult few months. With the injury list getting longer as well as unavailability of some players, there will certainly be a rallying call from the management and coaching staff for all players to make them selves available over the coming weeks.
