On Saturday Langholm travelled to play Livingston, who are rooted at the bottom of the table without a win this season, and after a game played in strong wind and occasional rain they came away with the points after a hard fought match,
but it was a victory which came at a cost with Steven Nicol
being taken to hospital with an ankle injury which is ligament damage and Niall Cubbon
suffering a suspected broken nose.
Langholm started strongly and after a stirring attack on the home line the ball was shipped out to Keith Davidson
who dropped a neat goal to take an early lead after two minutes. There then followed a period of sustained ariel pressure into the home 22, one such kick from Colin Jardine
was nearly gathered by the kicker with the line at his mercy but he was unlucky not to reclaim the ball.
More pressure followed and good interpassing between backs and forwards saw play transferred from one wing to the other, back across the width of the pitch and then, in one final flowing movement, back across which ended with Davidson throwing out a long pass to Sean Potts
on the left wing to run in for a try in the corner which went unconverted.
Unfortunately, from the kick off, the ball was knocked on as our forwards attempted to gather the kick and Livingston had a scrum in the visitors 22. With a solid base from which to launch an attack they came close to scoring but an excellent covering tackle by Lewis Miller (Buc) momentarily held the line intact but the ball was offloaded in the tackle and a quick pick and drive did produce an unconverted try.
At the end of the first quarter of play Cubbon took a knock to the face and had to leave the field to receive treatment and was replaced by Lewis Miller (Hen). Livingston attacked again but from a scrum in the Langholm 22 they were penalised and play was cleared to the other end. Shortly after Nicol was injured when he landed awkwardly from a lineout and was replaced by Allan Tyler
Just before half time the home side equalised with a penalty and it looked like it would be all square at the break but in a reversal of earlier events Livingston knocked on when trying to gather the kick off and Langholm were able to attack from the scrum. Mark Young
, our newly recruited scrum half, fed Davidson who broke down the blind side to score an unconverted try in the far corner to give Langholm a 18-8 half-time lead.
The second half was a rather fractured affair, littered with penalties, and a stop start affair as a number of home players received treatment for injuries. The home side reduced the lead with a penalty and Langholm had to defend stoutly against some sustained attacks but held the line in tact before returning play to the other end where Cubbon, back after treatment, added a further two penalties, the second of which proved to be the very last kick of the day, and give Langholm a 19-11 win and deny the home side a bonus point.
