St Briavels Bread and Cheese Dole
Another quirky tradition in Gloucestershire, this time though in the Forest of Dean!
Following evening service crowds wait outside St. Mary's Parish Church to receive the 'Dole' . Two people stand on the high church wall and throw small pieces of bread and cheese from large baskets which are caught caught by the parishioners. In days gone by the those who claimed the 'dole' had to pay a penny which then entitled them to cut and take wood from Hudnalls or the Free Woods.
This event dates back to the time of Milo, Earl of Hereford in the 12th Century, but was first recorded in 1799
