First win of the season

The Larks travelled to north Devon last night hoping to get some return from opponents who'd managed to defeat us twice last season. A coruscating second half performance - including a superb man of the match display from striker Matt Groves - duly ensured that all three points came home to Somerset with us.

The first half was nothing much to write home about, once an initial flurry of activity at both ends of the pitch fizzled out. Early on Grovesey launched a strike across goal that looked momentarily as if it had gone into the net, then Barnstaple's Jordan Charran flashed a strike past Shaun Semmens' far post. Cory Simpson had two chances to put the Larks ahead, one a stinging half-volley that went just over, and then a shot supplied by Grovesey that swung wide. The half ended with the Larks crowded into the Barnstaple box for a corner, which captain Matt Guy, who was imperious in central defence throughout, very nearly exploited with a header.

Barnstaple are a big, physical side and we perhaps gave them a little too much respect in the first period. This all changed in the second half. Less than five minutes after the restart we won a free kick into the Barney box, which was only partly cleared; Geraint Bater passed the ball back in, enabling Jay Adams to score his first ever goal for the club with a strong header.

With the advantage finally gained the Larks really started to fly. Cory had two excellent opportunities to increase the lead but it was our number 10 who doubled the lead with a beautiful finish off a George King cross. Only two minutes later Grovesey scored again, this time a composed low shot with the keeper at his feet.

Three goals in 15 minutes gave us quite a cushion but the Larks continued to press. Joe Tumelty and Alex Lambert came on and gave the Barnstaple defence fresh headaches. Under considerable pressure the home keeper dropped the ball but no one managed to latch onto it. Cory did well to retain possession but the eventual shot hit the side netting, then Alex launched a characteristic quick run down the wing but had to settle for a corner. Barney had one last chance to get a consolation goal when Shaun had to make a brave interception with one of their forwards bearing down on him. The game ended with Cory yet again threatening after good work from Jamie Lyons.

In truth the scoreline could have been worse still for our hosts. This fine win should help build momentum for the big FA Cup tie down at Taunton on Saturday.
