Stripped To Pieces
Heriots kindly re-arranged last weekend's fixture to accommodate Lasswade at short notice.
Right from the off, the signs were ominous. Arriving at Goldenacre with out our strips is not the best preperation to a match. Speedy work on the flank by Stevie Metcalfe and a dummy switch on the wing by Jimmy Gray retrieved the missing items.
The fact that our squad has had no game time for some weeks, showed right away as a powerful Heriots pack constantly rucked the ball off our 'Swade boys. Despite their greater size and - it seemed - numbers, Lasswade stood up to their attacks, however they always found a way through.
It was very difficult conditions, a player had been removed to play for the s2's and many having to play out of their familiar positions. Well done to Lewis for slotting in at Full Back, Alesio into Scrum Half and Thomas at Fly Half. Even John found himself being moved out of the pack and answering to the call of duty by plugging the holes in the backs. Another mention for Ryan, who on his first full outing put in the tackle of the day.
Despite the one way flow, the Lasswade boys showed great conviction in seeing it out right through to the last 15 minutes, when clearly the match was lost, but their was much still to be achieved. By the end, the passes were making their way to the wing and 'Swade had Heriots on the back foot. The confidence gained from that was clear for all to see. Well done to everyone who pitched in for the sake of your other team mates.
Heriots, a school team it may be, were the ones who taught us a lesson. They played structured rugby, kept their discipline and didn't mock their opposition who got a real shoeing. Respect goes a long way in this sport ... from players, coaches and spectators alike.
