After last weeks disappointing performance against RHC a much improved attitude was required against Biggar. We travelled down through a snow covered landscape to find an excellent 1st team pitch available for us despite very cold conditions. We started with 14 a-side, Biggar being short due to a late arrival, and made a great start. Within the first couple of minutes Martin, who always has an excellent eye for the gap, ghosted through the Biggar defence to get our first points which Harry converted. Soon after Sam burst through to power in and give Martin the 2 point opportunity.

So 14 nil up and it looked like a comfortable game was on the cards. However Biggar soon showed why they are much improved on last season and started to pressurise our defence. Tackles were missed and organisation went astray and we lost Matty D then Scott through injury as the Blacks went over for 3 scores before the break.

Last week the heads went down but today in the second half Lasswade started to show some real character. Matty Duffy sparked the recovery as he came back onto the field and carried the ball deep into the Biggar 22. The forwards went through the phases and Shaun took the ball right to the line. Euan was then on hand to make the final yard and get the 5 points. Once again Harry slotted the points to get us back in the game. The boys were now playing with a fantastic intensity with great hits going in all over the park from the likes of Jack, Cammy M and Adam.

After more good work at the breakdown the ball was popped to Cammy McVicker who took off down the wing and outpaced some sizeable Biggar defenders to score out wide. Harry then stepped up to kick a superb conversion from out wide to give us a 28-22 lead.

With the clock at the 20 minute mark Biggar kicked long and Oscar was on hand to touch down in our try area. Although the boys thought that last play had been called the ref waved play on and the 22 drop had to be taken. The ball ended up in the hands of Biggar’s strongest runner who outpaced the backs to go under the posts. Biggar then had a kick at goal to win the game but unfortunately for them, the kick went wide.

In the development period both injuries and the cold sapped the Lasswade strength but Cameron Hardman and Matty Duffy scored a try each against 2 or 3 from Biggar (the coaches were too cold to count at this point!).

So our second half today was probably the best 20 minutes of the season in terms of grit, determination and no little skill. Every player put in a shift today despite the conditions, showing the rewards that hard work can give.
