Backs Moves Aplenty
What a difference a week makes after playing in Artic conditions in Biggar last week to springtime sunshine this weekend. There could be no excuses for dropping passes today due to frozen fingers and as the game went on the warm hands scored some great tries.
Dunbar were quickest off the mark today and were 5 points up after a couple of minutes as one of their strong running backs went round the sides to outpace our defence and score under the posts.
The boys soon woke up and started to put some good moves together. Scott Muir was back to his best today and soon went over after jinking through several defenders to set Harry up with a simple conversion in front of the posts.
The forwards were next to claim a try after going through the phases and giving Martin Pritchard the chance to get his debut score from short range.
Dunbar weren’t to be outdone, using their powerful runners to good effect and going over to even things up thanks to a few missed tackles.
With half time approaching we won a line out in the Green 22 and passed the ball out through the backs to allow Scott to touch down in the corner.
In the second half both defences worked hard to restrict any more scores. Lasswade came close on a number of occasions but the final whistle went with the score stuck on 17-12.
It was in the development period that we really came alive and went over for 4 unanswered tries. Scott went over thanks to some great set up work by Martin Jones who had taken over at 10. Cameron Hardman got his second try in as many weeks after running from the half way line and using his extra long legs to beat some chasing defenders.
Scott then got his 4th of the day after another excellent move from the backs and Harry again converted. It’s always great to see training ground moves come off in open play as well as from set pieces.
The final score went to Matty Duffy who had another great game and powered down the line to finish under the posts. Cam B then got our final 2 points to give a total score of 31-12.
So after the forwards dominated in our away game at Dunbar, it was great to see the backs playing well today and setting up some great scoring opportunities.
We now need to wait and see how results go elsewhere to find out which of the semi-finals we’ll be in.
