P6 Portobello and Musselburgh match reports

Two weeks of rearranged matches have seen the P6s take on first Portobello and then Musselburgh on the AstroTurf as the team at least got some game time during the recent poor weather.

Lasswade 6 Portobello 6 - 26 November

Some slight confusion on the part of our opposition saw only 4 players from Porty turn up.  With ten Lasswade players, it was a simple matter of mates that saw us lend our opponents three players for a seven-a-side game.  Big thanks to Robert, Leo and Daniel for "volunteering" to play for the opposition, but it made for a very competitive game as the sides were evenly matched.

Playing three periods of ten minutes each, scores remained very close throughout the game, with only ever one try in it.  Both teams played well with some good handling and passing.  Tries came from some good runs, with Charlie demonstrating excellent speed and Jonny managing to steal a path through the midst of the Porty defence to level the scores at the death.

Lasswade 6 Musselburgh 12 - 2 December

Another seven-a-side match on a frost rather than a wet morning and this time Lasswade were beaten by a well drilled Musselburgh team.  Again playing three periods, the first period ended with just one try between the teams, but Musselburgh eased ahead over the next two periods to end up comfortable winners.

On a positive note, tackling was generally good from Lasswade and there was some good handling, although we still have a tendency to try and run too far with the ball whilst being tackled.  Where the team was undone was in some very good teamwork from Musselburgh who moved the ball well and at pace.  With our opponents offloading the ball as they were tackled, Musselburgh were able to create space which they exploited well.

We continue to have players who can make good runs once they are freed to do so.  During the match, Robert and Cameron both demonstrated some pace to score tries after finding room on the wing.   Getting the ball wide and quickly will yield results.

On another positive note, ball placement following a tackle was generally excellent and should have led to more dominance at the breakdown.  However, too often when the ball was placed back, we either went to play the ball rather than protect it, or our team was driven back by some strong rucking from Musselburgh who got more players into the ruck and we lost the ball.

So some good play in parts, but a couple of areas to work on before our next matches in a fortnight and for the team to put training into practice.  Teamwork will bring more tries!

Squad: Michael, Ciaran, Robert, Jamie, Daniel, Sophie, Marc, Liam, Charlie, Cameron, Jonny
