P6s blow away the cobwebs at Dalkeith
With three weeks away from rugby and the excesses of Christmas still lingering, the P6s travelled to face local rivals Dalkeith. Dalkeith had also struggled with a lack of rugby given the recent poor weather, but this would be the P6s first match on grass for quite some time. A mud-bath was likely.
Lasswade it was who proved to have the upper hand throughout the match and once they went ahead, the team never looked back. With just nine players for today's game, this offered everyone a chance of a lengthy spell on the pitch, but also exposed a general lack of fitness (too much playstation time over Christmas!). Plenty of time to work on this over the next couple of weeks.
But the lack of exercise aside, the team played very well. Passing was good and the team managed to get the ball out to the wings on a number of occasions. There is still a tendency to hang onto the ball a little too long when running into trouble, but the team made very good use of the whole width of the pitch today and the support from players without the ball was excellent throughout.
Rucking was also very good. On most occasions, when a player went down under a tackle, the support was there to protect the ball and we were ale to retain possession. There is room for improvement here though as a couple of rucks were lost, either from not taking the ball quickly enough or not having enough bodies in the ruck.
Today's tries came from a combination of strong running and good passing to get the ball into spaces. Mikey, Cameron, Robert and Liam (with a full length run of the pitch) all on the score sheet today as the team racked up nine tries.
Defence was strong with the team keeping the line well and some excellent tackling keeping the opposition to just four scores. The team still need to try to keep tackles down below the waist as the referee was penalising anything that looked high, but every player made a great defensive effort and tackled well.
Final score: Dalkeith 4 Lasswade 9
This was a great start to 2013 and if future games see this level of effort, the P6s can surely compete with any team they come up against.
Squad: Mikey, Ciaran, Liam, Cameron, Robert, Leo, Marc, Jamie, Craig
