P6s at Linithgow
The last time the boys played Linlithgow was as P5s in the final of our own tournament last May. On that day, they won, but today, against two very strong Stirling County teams and an equally useful Linlithgow team, results didn't go their way.
For the record, the three games finished:
Stirling A 5 Lasswade 1
Linlithgow 4 Lasswade 0
Stirling B 6 Lasswade 1
Ultimately, it's the performance that matters and trying to identify areas for the team, and for individual players to work on and develop.
Our forward play was good and we got players into the rucks well. Most of the time, we resisted the temptation to immediately play the ball and instead sought to secure possession. We need to learn to get the ball away a little more quickly, but that will come.
What was also encouraging was that we were able to turn possession over on occasion, and also that we challenged for almost every loose ball, something we did less well at Musselburgh and that we had asked the boys to do.
We worked hard to try and gain ground and the practice last week, when we worked on offloading the ball, seems to have paid some dividends. However, our opponents were also well drilled and when our players got isolated, as happened a little too often, the ball was turned over.
Perhaps our best overall performance came against Linlithgow. Although we didn't score, the quality of the rugby played by both teams was very high and, with a little bit of luck, or another pass or two, the result could have been much closer.
Our two tries today, both against Stirling County teams, came from perseverance. In the first game, strong running from Mikey down the wing as he found some space was rewarded with a try in the corner. And in our final game, it was Patrick who stole down the other wing to score, ending a good period of play.
So whilst perhaps not the results that may have been hoped for, it was a beautiful day for rugby and its great to see the team so well supported again, as they are at every match. It is from tough games like these that the boys will learn most. As they have shown before, they can compete with the best teams, all they need is belief.
