P5 at Penicuik Match Report

Lasswade triumph over mud and rain.

Lasswade finally made the trip through to Penicuik for a fixture that had been previously been a victim of the weather. The soft ground and often driving rain made for a cold and wet morning but both parents and boys more than rose to the occasion.

A sign of how healthy P5 rugby at Lasswade is was the fact that we were able to field two separate teams while our opponents were supplemented by P6's.

Team Omega were looked after by Tom and consisted of:

Matthew, Owen, Ruben, Finlay, Craig, Declan, Liam and Josh.

Team Alpha were with Chris and the line up was:

Todd, Cameron, Charlie, Jason, Fraser, Evan and Blair.

Paul had kindly agreed to look after the P1-3's for the day.

As Chris and I were refereeing we did not see the other teams play so will split the reports.

Team Omega v Dalkeith.

Lasswade win.

Due to the hectic pace of the match I did not keep a note of the scorers so this will be a team report in the true sense.

Dalkeith were a much improved side from the ones we have met in the past and were far stronger physically than usual. In a hard fought encounter we won by the odd try.
While still ducking out of the odd the tackle the overall improvement in defense was excellent. The tries against were scored through great Dalkeith off load play and there were no runaway scores. This is great to see and shows there is a very strong platform on which to grow.

In attack it was very pleasing to see that all boys were intent on taking the ball forward and the support play was developing well.

Team Omega v Penicuik

Lasswade win.

Another close game decided by one try.

Penicuik are the best passing team I have seen in four years. They didn't have many players with a large physical presence but their ability to keep the ball alive and going forward is something we should all learn from.
If it hadn't been for our dogged defense and the odd unfortunate handling error we would have lost this match. Tackling was even stronger than in the first match and when we build on our rucking skills this team will be very hard to score against.

Going forward we kept the error count down to a minimum and this paid great dividends in the number of attacks converted into scores.

On a final note it is incredibly pleasing to see our boys towing the line with the referee's decisions. While in the past we may have been guilty of moaning there is now a high level of maturity in the team. "Getting on with it" is a skill in itself to learn and will enhance the boys overall development hugely as well as the reputation of the club.

Thanks to all who braved the conditions and played and supported in the true spirit of rugby.

Team Alpha
Like Tom I was also reffing so wasn’t able to keep a close eye on the score or scorers but noted that we won both games by a couple of try’s.
Lasswade Alpha v Penicuik
After such a long wait between games it became apparent right from the start that boys wanted to put their hard work in training to action and despite starting without the ball they immediately put Penicuik under pressure, however Penicuik responded well and were very impressive in keeping the ball alive in very tricky conditions. Our boys stuck to the task and together marshalled a very strong defensive line and made Penicuik work for all of their try’s. In attack we showed some really strong running and the support play was much better than it has been previously and an area that we still need to improve. We didn’t throw ball around as well as our opponents but when we did pass is was accurate and the handling was certainly a plus point given the conditions.

Lasswade Alpha v Dalkeith
Another tough game against our nearest and dearest where we had to work hard to finish the game off. Dalkeith played some very good rugby and had one particularly strong running kid who provided a tough task for our defence however the boys stood up well and made them work for every inch of ground gained. In attack we played a little more one out rugby in this game probably because they were all cold and wet but all credit to them they stuck to the task well and at times played some very good rugby. It was also pleasing to note that some of our smaller kids performed very well in the ruck area where we recycled possession very well.

A very pleasing run out by both teams with many positives, and as ever a few area’s to work on in training. All of the coaches are delighted with the boys commitment and application so far this season. Being able to field two teams was a big help to us and we must thank Dalkeith and Penicuik who agreed to play both Lasswade teams at the expense of playing each other and this allowed all of the kids to play the maximum amount of rugby.
