P5 Dalkeith Away
A great turnout for first fixture of the year.
15 turkey weary souls basked in the sunshine of Dalkeith on Sunday, blinking like Chilean miners, as they emerged from their cars after 3 weeks of darkened rooms and x-box 360's.
We loaned Dalkeith a player so we had 3 teams of 7 and had a round robin session. With Chris coaching as much as refereeing we were able to forget the scores and concentrate on all 21 players learning and having fun. He did a great job of making sure all the players on the pitch were encouraged and helped, and it speaks volumes that a local derby passed off without a cross word from anyone.
It took a few breakaway runs to refresh the memory about the importance of legs in the tackle but the handling was tight from the start. This coming Sunday there is a club wide focus on off loading the ball in the tackle and I would say this is one of our strongest areas. There is the odd panic with the ball being tossed backwards to no player in particular, but at least it's going backwards now!
Both sets of Lasswade players displayed encouragingly cohesive team performances. We were backing up the runner well and are begining to get the ball out to the wing. Anyone who has braved Murrayfield to watch Edinburgh or Scotland recently would have noticed how rarely these professional teams manage it, and how detrimental that is to the result. As the pitches we play on get bigger it will become increasingly important to realize that a ball travels faster when passed than when run in the hand.
Two special mentions this week. Firstly to Blair who had an outstanding morning with the ball. Running in several tries down the wing, it's great to see a new recruit excelling like that.
Secondly Connor braved his first full set of games and displayed bags of enthusiasm and his tackling suggests he has very comprehensive private medical insurance! A great effort from our newest player.
The highest praise of how we played comes from Charlie though, who crossed the Rubicon and donned the green and red of Dalkeith. He was in a lot of pain on Sunday evening and admitted that the Lasswade tackles had been "full on and bl**dy hurt!"
It was lovely to see so many boys turn out and as always they were supported on the touchline by parents, whose good humor and banter makes these matches a pleasure to watch.
Many thanks to all.

Great report Tom, I think you have missed your calling in the journalism profession.
I would echo the sentiments about how well the boys played given the christmas break.
