Peebles 65 Lasswade 19
Having brought Musselburgh down last week, Lasswade travelled to Peebles hopeful of improving on the 5-71 drubbing in the home leg. The visitors managed only a slight improvement in the points conceded but three tries and two conversions confirm that the Borders side didn’t have things all their own way.
The worst of the damage was done in the first half. Competing up front and in the set pieces, Lasswade could not contain the Peebles back line. Spearheaded by Kiwi centre Hemara, they found or punched holes in the centre or created overlaps out wide.
The first try, by Scott was on the board inside the first two minutes but the hosts had to settle for two Raeburn penalties during the next 20 as Lasswade’s defence kept them away from the try line but not out of their half.
The dam finally broke again early in the second quarter with Raeburn finishing a break through the middle under the posts and three more tries from Cruikshank,Clinch and Hemara together with four Raeburn conversions, brought up the half time score of 39-0.
Far from bowed, Lasswade opened the second half with a forward onslaught setting up a five metre-lineout and a trademark catch and drive - finished off by Turnbull on this occasion.
Peebles replied almost immediately as Hemara made the break and set up Blyth for a 7 point try beside the posts and duplicated the performance just four minutes later but Blyth could only make the corner and Raeburn’s conversion slipped wide.
51-5 behind, Lasswade didn’t lie down and gained and held a foothold in the home 22. A series of patient recycles eventually created the space for Quigley to barge and spin over close enough for Brown to add the two points with 27 minutes still on the clock.
Again Peebles responded immediately with a strong individual effort by replacement Wills under the posts.
The visitors dug in and for the next twenty minutes were, if anything, slightly on top and were rewarded when a well worked move by the backs involving Hennessey, Elliot and Mark Wilson saw the latter finish off beside the posts and Hennessey dropped the conversion to save time as they went after the bonus try. That was not to be and Peebles had the last word with another converted try in the final move of the game.
While Peebles’ next fixture is, in effect, the League title show-down at home to Howe of Fife in a fortnight’s time, Lasswade travel this Saturday to bottom-of-the-table and pointless Morgan. Kickoff 3pm.
