HARD WORK PAYS OFF
Hello folks and welcome to the match report from FLOODLIGHT FRIDAY!!! Yes Friday night rugby was back as the seconds welcomed local rivals Haddington in the rearranged league game. Due to both the coaches being unavailable, I approached a fellow cheese toastie lover to assist in the coaching aspects of the game for us. This guy is a new upcoming coach and not long returned from his ventures on the world invitational beach rugby sevens tournament before he takes his mantle as player / interim coach / physio and all round good guy of 'The Occasionals'. Yes that’s right folks, Markie B was in da house!! On the the flip side, an old friend of the seconds was on hand to jot some match notes for me, yes the tache was back and the scribe was Davie Oliver!! Good to see you Davie.
A large crowd had assembled in the Lasswade stand to witness a closely fought game of rugby and a good advert for the game. Lasswade fielded a strong team and had a full compliment on the bench for Markie to utilise. Lasswade started into the slight breeze and put a lot of pressure on Haddington from the off. Some good runs from Andy Barr and Ian Wilson was asking questions of the Haddington defence. Haddington then made a break through a Lasswade mistake and if it wasn't for the pace of the gazelle Blair Smith, Haddington would have certainly scored in the corner. Again sustained pressure from the home team was then hoofed down field by Haddington due to our mistakes and valuable territory was lost. Again Haddington came close to scoring but this effort was thwarted by the louping Ali Murray who nailed the fullback the danger area forcing a the ball and player over the dead ball line, tremendous effort!! Lasswade appeared to be struggling at the breakdown with many a ball turned over allowing Haddington to clear their lines. But a try for the home team was coming from all the sustained pressure and the flying wing Rick McKenna obliged which gave the crowd something to cheer about and was coolly converted by Danny Kerr. Haddington had several penalty kicks towards the end of the half which were pushed wide.
HALF TIME LASSWADE 7 – HADDINGTON 0
After some changes to the team and some strong constructive words from Markie and Oz Wright, Lasswade kicked off the second half. Unfortunately the kick off never went 10 and immediately the home side were on the defensive. But Lasswade dug deep and continued to pressure the Haddington line. A series of drives on the Haddington line finally saw the lad build like a block of flats cut the through the last few defenders like a trout in a stream, yes it was Rory Mackenzie that scored. The conversion attempted was close from wide out, but not close enough and it remained 12-0, but a no bad effort for the lad who scored the try. Haddington then rallied back and a quick tap penalty saw the scrum half pop over to score which was then converted, 12-7 – game on!! The game was closely contested in every aspect, the scrums, lineouts, breakdowns were a fierce battleground with both sides competing very well. It would come down to who scored next and it would take something special to do so. Up stepped the flying wing again to claim this try with a brilliant individual effort to beat several defenders on his way to score in the corner, another classy Rick McKenna try. Again it was just out of range of the boot and the home team were just edging away. Final minutes of the game were still fiercely contested and hard going right up until the final whistle which was welcomed by the home support.
FINAL SCORE LASSWADE 2XV 17 – HADDINGTON A 7

The Man of the Match was awarded to Ali Lamond for showing his versatility by starting at scrum half before switching to the back row and playing well throughout the game.
