Latchford took a step into unfamiliar territory with the visit of West Craven to Victoria Park on Sunday. New to the North West Counties league, West Craven was unknown prior to arriving in Warrington on a chilly but bright Sunday morning. Bringing only nine players was probably the first hint of an easy passage for the Albion who loaned two players to West Craven to allow a full sided match to take place. Matty Lake and Joe Daniels played for West Craven, both played really well and will have benefited from a full game. However, West Craven was on the end of a thrashing to nil with the Albion running in eleven tries and kicking nine conversions.
The match itself was at times an untidy affair with Latchford guilty of far too many handling errors (11 in total!) which would have made life much more difficult against one of the better sides. On a positive note, conversion kicking was significantly improved with Latchford scoring 9 of 11. All in all, the boys did their job, maintained their unbeaten start to the season and took their aggregate points scoring total (including the two pre-season matches) to 288 with 70 points conceded.
West Craven kicked off and the first few sets of 6 were scrappy, with some good individual tackling from Jake and Lloyd and some excellent runs from Joseph Higgins and Connor. However, progress continually broke down as handling errors and knock-ons passed the initiative back to West Craven.
The first score took some time to arrive but was well worth the wait with Beast marauding single handed through the flimsy West Craven defence to touch down. Callum converted. The second try followed quickly when Dougie latched onto a Jack pass to run around the West Craven back line to score. Lloyd converted for his first points since his return from illness – welcome back! Next to put points on the board was Will McDonnell who broke from inside his own half to outpace the whole of the West Craven side and claim an excellent try. Jack converted. Lloyd was up next with a blast through the West Craven defensive line to cross the whitewash. David Evans converted. This followed some solid tackling from Connor Chadwick and Aaron McLay and a memorable Harvey jinking run. Will scored his second a couple of minutes later when he latched onto a pass from David following good play by Jack and Harvey. Finally just before half time, Beast yet again bulldozed his way through the defence to complete his brace of tries. Connor Chadwick converted.

The second half started as the first had finished with another Latchford touchdown. This time a David Evans try following a smart pass from Jack Foulkes helped to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Harvey Matthews converted successfully. Try number eight was a well deserved score from Lloyd who ran onto a pass from Jack to dance his way down the wing to score. Will converted. The same Lloyd/Jack combination was responsible for try number nine and yet again a superb pass from Jack unlocked the West Craven defence and Lloyd happily ran through for a well deserved hat-trick. Taig converted. Try number 10 was a solo effort from Jake Warburton who ran from inside his own half to outpace the opposition and score in the corner for an unconverted try. The final try was probably the best of the day, when a slick passing move between Jack and David saw the ball arrive with Taig who somehow avoided a number of attempts to tackle him and finally scored a well deserved touchdown. The conversion was completed by Dougie.
All in all, this was another solid performance. A more robust start to the game and better concentration could perhaps have added more points. However, against weak opposition the side was never really in any danger of conceding a try, let alone losing.
A special mention must go to Matty and Joe who both performed admirably for West Craven. It is never easy to play for the opposition but they both gave 100% and should be very proud of their contribution to the game.
