Launceston u13s return to winning ways (just!)

by Mark Brewerton

Newquay u13s: 24 Launceston u13s: 31

On a lovely sunny day in Newquay this was real curate's egg of a game and just about summed up Launceston u13's season, at times brilliant and at times terrible but rarely dull to watch. As ever Launceston were up against a much bigger pack of forwards and from the start it was clear that Newquay realised this & were going to play to their strengths. The first 10 minutes of the game were played almost entirely in Launceston's 22 with Newquay's big pack rumbling forwards through a succession of driving mauls and powerful drives around the fringes of the ruck. During this period of the game Newquay scored 2 tries with Launceston barely able to get their hands on the ball. Suddenly the momentum and pattern of the game then changed completely with Launceston's backs starting to get some possession and the chance to run. After a fine handling move took the young blacks deep into Newquay territory, the pack gave Newquay a dose of their own medicine and drove prop Caleb Forsyth over for Launceston' opening try. This was converted by Dan Goldsmith. Launceston's then cut loose from the restart with fly half Sam Parham making a quick break and then setting inside centre Harry Brewerton free for a run to the line. There was still time for Launceston to score one more try with Sam and Harry repeating the trick with another swift blind side break although this time Harry had much more ground cover, he just about had the legs to get home for the score. This try was converted by Sam Thomas. After this sublime play, Launceston went back to the ridiculous at the start of the second half with some very poor tackling allowing Newquay to score with the first move of the half. After this the game settled into something of a pattern with Launceston having the better of the territory and possession but not being able to fashion an opening. Eventually another score did come, once again some fine passing gave Harry some room and with a fine eye for a gap, he sprinted over from the 22 to score near the posts. Again the try was converted by Sam Thomas. Having got their noses in front, Launceston then contrived to let Newquay back into the game missing tackle after tackle to let one of Newquay's wingers run right across the pitch and score on the outside. This try was converted and the blacks were now only 2 points in front. Luckily good Launceston reappeared and after camping near the Newquay line for fully 5 minutes Caleb plunged over for his second try after a series of driving rucks, this was the final score of the match.
