Saints Edge Final
St. Austell Colts 27 pts
Launceston Colts 22
CABs Colts ran the home side very close in a seesaw of a final at St. Austell. A partisan crowd helped the Saints to a nervy finish to secure the Cornwall Cup and exact revenge for their defeat in the Premier League final to the CABs. The first twenty minutes was dominated by the CABs who took the lead on five minutes with a Charlie Wevill
try and Jordan Cunningham conversion. The lead could have been extended but the CABs elected to tap and run a penalty that was under the posts, unfortunately they lost the ball from this. A penalty kick was then taken but narrowly missed. Joe Vanstone
extended the lead to 0 - 12 with a try on the left wing from a solid scrum and well worked backs move. The home side then started to come back, helped by a series of penalties and a difficult to understand yellow card for Dan Goldsmith
. They scored three tries to take the lead going in to half time, 15 - 12. With Goldie still off the field Saints scored from the restart, poor tackling letting them through to make the score 20 - 12. With a few changes and fresh legs plus the return to a full fifteen the CABs came back determinedly. Tries from Harry Brewerton and a second for Joe Vanstone
gave them back the lead, 20 - 22. The home side were not to be outdone and they came back with a converted try to make it 27 - 22. With the clock running down it looked like it was all over but the CABs gave one final huge effort, with a rolling maul that started in their own half and finished on the 5m line. It looked like they were going to walk the ball over the line to win but a fumble and knock on ended the move and the match. Despite the loss the players can rightly be proud of a tremendous season. Two finals, one trophy, 18 wins from 22 matches, 90 tries and over 600 points: superb statistics. But even more importantly, memories and friendships that will last them the rest of their lives. They have made their coaches, families and the club very proud. Thank you lads for a cracking season, it has been a pleasure reporting on your matches.
