Under 16's V Penzance County Cup QTR Final
Rescheduled match takes the lads to the far West of Cornwall for an evening flood lit clash... in St Just...
After traveling to Penzance a week or so earlier to find the game postponed by the referee due to a millpond of a pitch the U16's found themselves having to partake in a bit of a drive after school/college - Westwards down the A30 until the A30 was no more and beyond !
The Pirates awaited our arrival for their 'home' Cup fixture at St.Just RFC, who had very kindly allowed us to play on their ground as the usual Pirates ground was again unplayable that evening.
Kick off commenced under the sodium lights, Launceston ( missing a couple of usual starters due to injury or Skiiing..) started well uphill against the wind, the forwards,as a good combined unit, controlled the possession and advanced, but the Penzance back line, given the chance from a series of errors from Lanson, had two tries on the board after 15 mins, the visitor's defence caught unawares. Near the end of the half, again the Pirates scored.
Half Time - 15-0 to the Home side.
Although the Launceston forwards were playing well and dominating their opposition, they were not capitalizing on their possession of the ball, soon after the second whistle, the Pirates scored again - Launceston needed to pull this one out of the bag somehow. But a win was not to be, even though the lads did manage to put in two great charging tries, again from the forwards and powerfully finished off by No.8 Sione Funaki (playing his debut game for the club), Penzance nipped through the Launceston gaps in the lines twice more to win the game - they meet Hayle in the semi-finals next week.
Launceston played courageously throughout the match, however, the side that score more points, wins the game.
Penzance 32- 12 Launceston
Bring on the next game......
