Silhillians in Second Team Cup Semi Firsts at Rugby St Andrews Six Nations coming up

Although the email system is working better now, the RFU have warned us the GMS system is being tinkered with this week which might affect distribution for all clubs. There was no first team game this week so attention was focussed on the Seconds and the Colts.

The Seconds entertained Silhillians in what was a dress rehearsal for the Warwickshire Cup Semi-final this week. In sticky conditions we won an open game by 30-14 with Connor Chamberlain showing his paces to run in three long range tries and Tom Jewitt converting all three plus three penalties. It was a good all-round performance with Chris Morris catching the eye in the unfamiliar role of prop and doing a good imitation of Dan Barber with his speed and power in the loose. The semi-final game is on Sunday at Silhillians and is due to kick off at 2.00. Try and get there to cheer the lads on.

The Colts took on an Old Laurentian development side, who were older and extremely big. They got away to a bad start and took our time to get it together but the longer the game went on the better we got and we went down 10-27 with Drew Sinnott touching down and Ben Leahy kicking a penalty and conversion to add to his growing reputation as a kicker .

The first team have a big game against Rugby St Andrews on Saturday and we must win to say clear of the relegation dog fight. We beat them comfortably at home in October and they looked odds on for the drop until they had two wins in succession around Christmas, including the scalp of Earlsdon away - although they came down to earth against Kenilworth in their last match. The Colts are at home to Market Bosworth [late news is that this is cancelled and we are looking for a game] and the Seconds are playing on Sunday in the Cup game. Also on Sunday, the minis are all training and the U13, U15 and U16 are playing Sutton Coldfield

Next week the Six Nations championships will be starting and England travel to Ireland to play the pre-tournament favourites. We have some background with this fixture and not all of you will remember that a Leamington Rovers player, Dr Alfred Miller, played in the fixture in February 1883 at Manchester. This was the first year of the Home International Championship (then Four Nations). Although credited as a Kingstown player, he was fairly regular player in the Leamington Rovers team during the season and turned out against Burton the following week. He is therefore claimed as Leamington’s first international footballer. He joined the club in 1882-83 having been appointed as Assistant [and later Chief] Medical Superintendent] of the Warwick Asylum at Hatton. A forward, he was capped 3 times by Ireland. Keith Savage, who started his career at Leamington, played in the fixture in1966 and 1967 and Peter Preece also played in 1973 and 1975 during his Coventry days. The 1973 game is remembered because England fulfilled the fixture despite the risk to the safety of the players at the height of the “troubles”, after Wales and Scotland had refused to travel to Dublin in 1972.

We still have a few tickets available for the Italy and Scotland games at Twickenham.
