Leeds Akkies Rugby League Club are gearing up for the 2016 Summer Season and there is a new man at the helm.

I'm confident about the year and hopefully we will see some new faces on the training pitch come pre-season training
- Keith Sandhu, Head Coach

Current University of Leeds Coach and club stalwart Keith Sandhu has stepped up to the role of Head Coach and is looking forward to showing what he can bring to the Team.

“I’m excited to take on another challenge this season, the club has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and has a solid foundation, with a new core of players.
I'm confident about the year and hopefully we will see some new faces on the training pitch come pre-season training”

Despite still being a young coach, Keith has proved himself by taking University of Leeds from the third Tier of the British University & College Sports Competition to competing in the Northern Premier Division, competing alongside the likes of 11 time National Champions Leeds Beckett. In addition, Keith coaches the Yorkshire Students Regional side and the Great Britain Pioneers team.

Continuing as Chairman is Graeme Sarjent who has overseen a successful transitional period for the club which has a number of new faces wearing the shirt.

“Following an upturn in form in the second part of last season, and the appointment of a new coaching team, there is renewed enthusiasm at the club. This has been recognised by new sponsors coming on board, and whilst we know the league will be even stronger this year, we are confident we can step up to this challenge. With a full programme of social events planned too I would encourage old faces and new to get down to the club and to enjoy what is happening both on and off the field.”

The Clubs Preseason program will be beginning on Wednesday 30th March (7pm) at Weetwood Playing Fields before moving back to our Home at Old (Leeds) Modernians Sports Association when essential pitch maintenance is complete.

The fixture list is now live on our website (subject to change) and the Club will be competing in Yorkshire Men’s League Division 2. As always the club id welcoming to new players and volunteers.

When asked why he would encourage players and volunteers to get involved, Captain James Howard praised the positive experience the club brings to its members

“This season I will be entering my 10th year with the Akkies and I am delighted to be doing so as captain. I just cannot imagine a summer without the fun and frolics of an Akkies season. Every season throws up the exciting mix of sun fuelled, free flowing rugby, socials and incredible team bonding that grows each year. It is really good, friendly environment to amongst. Our door is open to all regardless of background and playing experience”

If would like more information about playing or getting involved with the club please feel free to contact Keith Sandhu (07901 915680)

This Season the club is proudly sponsored by LoveRugbyLeague.com and Opus. We thank them greatly for their support.'
