Leeds record first victory
Cheer cheer the red and the white!
Round 1 saw Leeds travel to Manchester to make their debut in the Central and Northern England League. The Minotaurs’ first opponents were the Sheffield Thunder, who have been arguably the most consistant team over the past few seasons.
With the club not having any warm up or pre-season games, expectations weren’t the highest. With only 9 boys available and 4 of those boys rolling in 10 minutes before kick off, the Minotaurs were up against it.
The first quarter was a bit cagey as both teams took a little time to really get into the match. The Minotaurs’ midfield, led by Movember Cup winning member Riley Kirkpatrick, started to get on top of the clearances. The double act of Dave Scarsella and Johnny Floridis up front proved successful as the Minotaurs kicked some important goals to take a lead into the first break.
Leeds started to get their hands on the ball more as Flo-Rida and ‘The Fridge’ piled on the goals. The midfield contingent of Paul Irwin, Rhys Williams and John Hinchliffe provided a great avenue to goal as they started to get their hands on the ball more.
The third quarter was evenly shared with Sheffield slightly edging it. The backline was put under a lot of pressure as the Thunder got on top in midfield. Credit to first gamer and fullback Ben Warran and Captain Courageous Bob Campbell for his inspirational mark while running back with the flight of the ball.
With fatigue and cramp setting in the Minotaurs needed a big last quarter effort. Sheffield kicked the first few goals to bring the margin back to under a goal and it looked like the Thunder would run over the tired Leeds boys. Wozza, Captain Campbell, The Crocodile Hunter, Hinchy, RKP, Willo, Johnny Flo and The Fridge all dug deep to finish the match off strongly to win by 29 points. Dave also attempted his nomination for mark of the year by climbing all over the Sheffield fullback, Tony Lockett style.
A big congratulations to all the boys who were involved in our debut game. To get a win with only 9 players with the majority of the squad recently new to the sport is exceptional.
