The annual Past Captains’ Reunion lunch was held at Leek Rugby Club on Saturday 5th November, with sixteen former 1st XV Captains attending.

These were: Geoff Haworth 1954-55, Jim Heckle 1959-61, Andy Worth 1969-70, Dave Scott 1970-72, Doug Coombs 1972-73, Bob Bamber 1973-74, Nick Barczewski 1979-81, Chris Simcock 1985-86, Jack Jackson 1986-87, Adrian Holland 1988-89, Phil Bebington 1989-91, Dan Hunt 1991-92, Dave Kiernan 1995-97, Paddy Lawlor 1999-2001, Jonty Cooper 2001-02, Tom Hine 2012-13.

The company assembled in the bar and later moved to the table where toasts and speeches were made before the meal was served, in order to avoid the noise in the bar as people assembled before the match.

The toast to” Leek Rugby Club” was proposed by Phil Bebington, who gave an amusing review of the changes in kit since he came into the game, from boots with leather “nail-on” studs, and dubbined balls, through Vic Bailey’s “long shorts,” and sets of cotton shirts where you were lucky to get one with two sleeves, to today’s skin-tight multi-coloured shirts and boots.

Jim Heckle gave the response on behalf of the club. Jim thanked Phil and spoke of the concern of all captains, without exception, not only for the team they captained but also for the continued success and prosperity of the whole club. He expressed the wish that not only would the club continue to prosper but that players would continue to enjoy their Rugby Football and playing for Leek Rugby Club.

After the speeches everyone sat down to a traditional meal of meat and potato pie, followed by apple crumble and custard, cheese and biscuits and coffee. Andy Worth expressed thanks to Dave Powell and Mark Hardern for their help in organising the event, and to the members of the under 15 team for serving the meal.

Afterwards, all the Past Captains went out into the beautiful autumn afternoon and had the pleasure of watching Leek 1st XV beat Old Saltleians RFC in Midlands West 2 (North) by 89 pts to 5, a suitably satisfying end to the reunion!
