After last week's one sided cup game against Foley in which CSOB came out on top, this week saw a return to League action. They were up against a strong Stapenhill side from Burton on Trent who currently sit in a mid table position. The visitors have had a mixed season so far but with a new management team in place, the players were eager to impress.
CSOB Manager Dan Hyde made a few changes to his lineup, Rob Drummond was away with family
commitments which meant Dale Walters moving to left back and his midfield place was taken by the returning Mitch Shenton after he missed last weeks game. Playmaker Matt Anderson and striker Will Bown were both unavailable due to illness which meant starts for Kieran Scotland and Mark Fox. Phil Bruce started in goal in place of Ash Knight and Nick Hambleton returned to the heart of the old boys defence in place of Nathan Ball.
It was obvious from the outset this would be a physical game but to be fair the CSOB players were not intimidated. Their quick passing game had served them well in their previous games and they were determined to stick with it.
Corners, at least the number Stapenhill conceded was an
indication of CSOB's growing pressure. To some extent this played into Stapenhill's hands, as they are a big physical side and well organised in defence. In spite of Stapenhill's physicality, CSOB played their passing game as this was their most likely way to test Stapenhill's stamina, certainly in the latter stages of the game. It would be fair to say that at this stage both defences were dominating the game and both keepers were hardly tested. Stapenhill were winning the majority of the 50/50 balls with Phillip Whieldon being in the thick of things but CSOB were keeping the pressure on.
Following a CSOB corner they had a good appeal for a penalty turned down when Jamie Pointon appeared to have been pulled down in the area. At the other end, Stapenhill had the ball in the net only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside.
As the game progressed it was looking increasingly likely that the game would be decided by the odd goal or as the result of a defensive error.
Half time: Leek CSOB 0 Stapenhill 0
Stapenhill brought on Jamie Russell for the injured Jimmy Easton at the break. And after only a short time they had their best chance of the game. There was a mix up in the CSOB defence but Charles Roomin's shot hit the side netting when he was well placed.
The game was evenly balanced but the breakthrough came on the hour mark when Drew Bennett carried the ball down the csob right. He played the ball into a congested Stapenhill box and as the defence hesitated, the ball reached Kieran Scotland's feet and he cooly slotted the ball home to give CSOB the lead.
The goal seemed to lift the whole CSOB side and they were now well on top and playing with freedom.
Stapenhill brought on Jack Briscoe for Sam Taylor. They were certainly
trying to raise their game, so much so they gave away a free kick in a dangerous position.
Mark Fox took the kick and the ball was deflected into the path of striker Jamie Pointon who produced a diving header to double CSOB's lead in the 70th minute.
Just 2 minutes later, CSOB had the ball in the net again after a delightful piece of skill on the edge of the box from Mark Fox took him past the Stapenhill defence and as his shot was going into the net, Jamie Pointon touched the ball home only for the linesman to raise his flag for offside. The game was now turning into a battle with Stapenhill looking to reduce the deficit.
CSOB brought on Marco da Silva for his first team debut in place of Mitch Shenton who had put in a great shift for his team in the engine room. Stapenhill were reduced to shooting from distance and they still couldn't find a way through the solid CSOB defence. Hyde made another change with Tom Bourne replacing striker Zak Barker as he looked to bolster his midfield. The final change saw young 16yr old Sam Wainright given his first taste of first team action after replacing goal-scorer Kieran Scotland.
Stapenhill went with three up front and put the old boys under some pressure in the final minutes but the CSOB defence coped well and they saw out the game by keeping possession.
