Quiet man off the field but explosive on it, an in-depth look at Jamie`s football life.

Jamie Pointon Interview.

Hi Jamie, your first memories of playing football as a kid.
I started playing football as far back as I can remember! My first proper team was Cheddleton Bombers up until the age of 14 when I moved to leek csob with a lot of the lads that I still play with today.

Who coached you at the Bombers

It was mark Harrison and then he left then it was Dave Goodwin
Did you enjoy those days, what position did you play
I've always been a striker. And I've always enjoyed my football but also been very competitive which sometimes shows on the pitch

At old boys at 14 how long did you stay at the club

I played for Csob for a season and then for stone dominoes for a season in which we actually pipped Csob to the league! I signed for Stoke City academy at the age of 16.

How did the academy turn out.

Well I finished top scorer for the under 18s and found myself playing for the reserves alongside the fringe 1st team players regularly
My manager was Noel Blake and he left to manager England under 18's and we had a new manager in. I actually injured my foot and went back to the new season with a new manager and as my injury was expected to keep me out all season he gave me a polite F off and released me, So it didn't go too well!

I think you’re under selling yourself there, but obviously a great experience for a young lad.

Yeah it was ... And I have some great memories. Like playing United at Carrington with Sir Alex watching and seeing players like Ronaldo etc. As a United fan myself that was great. I was subbed off and I remember Mikael Silvestre sitting on our bench talking to our coach he knew.

What was your thoughts on football at that time

At the time there was nothing better.. But after being released it drained my confidence and took my love from the game away for a while

You spoke about playing with kids from the Bombers days, I take it the same lads pulled you through that disappointment.

Yeah.. My first team i signed for after my injury was Leek Csob actually and I was playing for Britannia Inn on a Sunday. So I was with the likes of Sam Pettitt, Drew Bennett, Will Bown and Dale Walters.

So over the last four years or so. You have moved around clubs from BHG, Csob and Leek Town, why have you truly never settled down at one club.

I thought I would try and play as highly as possible. So with Leek Town it was a case of feeling fit and wanting to play but I was not played and moved on. So I felt quite comfortable and settled at Hanley Town last season and my intention was to stick with Hanley until I was approached by Dan Hyde. He made me aware of all the players he`d signed.. The majority was my best mates Matty, Mitch, Cowy and Drew etc. So I changed my mind and decided to join Csob and I feel settled and playing the best football I've played in a long time.

I can't argue with that. But I noticed last week your work rate was incredible, not just playing a strikers role, why was that.

Because I feel fitter than I ever have! I want to help the team and if it means covering a lot of ground and tracking back I try my hardest, i want to win every single game as ive said I'm competitive.

This has been a great start to the season, it's a powerful side with talent, but it's not just that, what makes old boys tick.

I think everyone having respect for who's in charge. I think it's very noticeable people listen to John, Dan and Andy, and there has been a lot of time and effort put in by them all on and off the pitch which i think we are giving back to them as the players.

This time last year did you fear for Old Boys.

I did think that they were in a bad place. i played against them around Christmas last year for Hanley in which we won and i actually scored, but it's a great job how it's been turned around and I think the facilities the club now has at Pointon park are brilliant.

Pointon Park is obviously my responsibility, but you enjoy the quality of the surface.

Yeah it's brilliant to have such a good pitch to play on, i wish we could play there every week!

Lets talk about the team, in a nutshell, how far can they go this season, all the way.

We can and I think we should be winning the league we are in with the set of players we have.. Some of the lads could easily play higher and hopefully all of the cups we enter which is looking good so far.

Players then…. In your personal opinion, who is the best looking player

Best looking ? Besides myself,, Nick Hambleton thinks he's joey Essex and gets called my worse looking brother so il give him that,,,, It's between Nick and the Physio anyway.

And the not so pretty, who fell off the ugly ladder hitting his face on every rung on the way down, is

Phil Bruce. Terrible haircuts and some terrible shots posing in budgie smugglers all over social media

Ha ha, quality.. best dressed man.

Matty.. Stereotypical Italian.. Always looks smart

Worst

Got to be Bourney
Joker in the pack

James Cowburn without a doubt, some of the things that go on behind the scenes are hilarious. Cowy has an incredible collage of Mitch (grower) Shenton

Mr Miserable

Mr miserable.. I’d say that was Mitch Shenton again but he's recently been the happiest I’ve seen him since he fell in love. Otherwise it's always a laugh in the dressing room.

Biggest pain in the arse on match day and why.

Biggest pain? Does Sam Pettitt count for making up fines and pestering until we pay? I swear he's never had a fine. Coincidence?

Finally mate, your personal message to the club in whole.

I just think it's great what everyone has done behind the scenes to get the club where it is now from this time last year. We have a great team and it's great that the Reserves have some promising lads coming through- Wainwright, Kie Wain etc. I think we have a successful season ahead of us and I'm looking forward to the rest and hopefully getting on the score sheet a few more times!
