Leek Town Rangers progressed through to the next round of the Area Cup with a comprehensive display against Blurton Terriers at Poplar Drive. The opening exchanges were fairly even as both teams settled into the game, but gradually Leek took control of the contest. The midfield trio of Byron Richardson, Kris Brown and Lewis Salmon did not let Blurton settle on the ball and the defensive pairing of Joel Millington and Bradley Eaton stood strong and coped well with whatever came their way. The opening goal arrived when a Salmon free kick seemed to be heading in when it struck the arm of a defender. The referee allowed the advantage though and Salmon reacted quickest to slam the ball home. Rangers were now on top and Richardson almost scored when he sent a shot narrowly wide. Zak Konstantino was introduced to the match and he was almost on the scoresheet when he met a Salmon cross first time but could not beat the keeper. Leek eventually got the second goal they deserved when a Konstantino flick header sent Oli Roberts on a run down the wing and his cross was met by Salmon who made no mistake to make it 2-0 to the visitors. The chances kept coming as Rangers pushed on to make the game safe and Konstantino went close with a header from a long "Delap" throw-in. Brown had a good shot well saved by the keeper, and Richardson sent a great far post header fractionly over from a fantastic curling Salmon cross. The third goal seemed like it just would not arrive as Konstantino was unlucky to see an effort strike the crossbar and Josh Daniel sent a trademark piledriver inches over. With 10 minutes of the contest remaining Terriers seemed to get a lifeline when the referee awarded them a dubious penalty. The spot kick was well struck and was heading for the top corner when Scott Shenton moved sharply to get both hands to the ball and keep the effort out. Yet another superb penalty save from the best keeper in the league!! Leek made sure there were no more scares and eventually put the game beyond doubt. Another Brown shot was saved by the Terriers keeper but the rebound fell invitingly for Eaton who slotted the ball into the back of the net. And there was time for one more goal as a Salmon effort was saved by the keeper and although the ball still seemed to be heading in Roberts made sure from a yard out and he got the goal that his play deserved. Final score 4-0 - well done lads.
