Fuelled-up and as keen as ever after the half-term break, the Under 12 Girls continue to impress manager Danny Sheldon with a 4-0 win over a not-complacent Congleton Vale Juniors on Saturday.
Right from the start Leek put pressure on their opposition with an immediate shot by Ellie Salt
, which flew just wide. The resulting corner found Kayleigh Sheldon
blasting another, followed by Laura Evans
; both shots alas being saved. Thoughtful teamwork around the Congleton goal mouth presented another flag opportunity, although the cleared ball found the foot-safe defender Libby Johnson
to take it down the line and set up Salt, for Evans to finally find the back of the net. And all this within the first six minutes.
For much of the first half the action remained in Congleton’s end, but they were by no means complacent. Leek worked together and a fearless attack by Tasia Brough
teed-up Evans who’s powerful right foot unfortunately cleared the bar.
With ten minutes of the first half remaining the action briefly moved to the Leek box but keeper Jenny Hesketh
made an easy save. Her powerful long centre goal kick found midfielder Kaytie Scragg
who’s accurate pass to Salt was given away by an inaccurate shot. Scragg quickly retrieved possession to set-up Sheldon and another close shot for Leek. In the closing stages further shots by Sheldon and a beauty by Brough, were both saved by a great Congleton keeper as the half-time whistle blew.
Half-time score 1-0 to Leek.
The second half saw more of the same with a great run and pass by the ever-energetic Abbie Sanders
finding Evans who’s cross to Salt resulted in a very early goal. Hesketh (now playing out) and Salt both saw near opportunities either saved or skimming over the bar. Sanders was again soon blasting down the flank with Evans ideally positioning herself to make it 3-0.
A series of throw-in’s resulted an a further opportunity for Sheldon which came close. Midfielders Maddie Bragg
, Keira Wells and defender Johnson demonstrated more excellent ball play enabling Sheldon to finally bag Leek’s fourth and final goal. With 10 minutes to go Sophie Walley
worked hard with Bragg and Wells to challenge and keep at bay Congleton’s determined efforts whilst a flurry of action in Congleton’s box featuring Scragg, Sanders and Wells. Brough’s resulting double shots were met by the keeper whilst Walley bravely survived a hard tackle shortly before the final whistle.
