Boss Wayne Johnson sprung more surprises in his team selection drafting in Mark Ruddock for his first game of the season to replace injured skipper Andy Taylor and leaving Wayne Corden on the bench.
Johnson picked himself again but had to replace goalkeeper Steve Hodgson who was unavailable with Stuart Heeps.
The opening of the game was marred by a serious ankle injury to Luke Robinson who was stretchered off after just 10 minutes.
The rest of the half was fairly even but goalless with clear-cut chances few and far between. Blues had a reasonable penalty shout turned down whilst Heeps made a good save in a one on one situation.
Most of the action came after the break with Leek stepping up a gear with Leon Ashman guilty of a bad miss seven minutes into the half when he headed over from two yards.
Two minutes later a good run and shot from Tom France fooled some of the crowd into thinking it was a goal but the ball hit the side netting.
Wayne Johnson then had a powerful header well tipped over by visiting keeper Karl Lewis before The Royals took the lead through Mark Bellingham against the run of play on the hour mark.
The Blues boss then replaced himself with Wayne Corden and the winger made an instant impression when a great cross was met by Ashman's head. The keeper could only palm the ball into the air and Matt Johnson bundled it home from a yard out to make the score 1-1.
Sutton Coldfield then broke clear but their striker fired well wide when clean through and play reverted to the other end where Matt Johnson's shot across the face of goal drifted agonisingly inches wide of the post.
With Blues looking the more likely to score, the visitors regained the lead through Matt Jamille in the 78th minute following a corner with a goal that once again exposed Leek's frailities at the back.
In the dying moments Ashman missed another chance from close range (pictured below) following more good work from Corden.
Ultimately it was a case of deja vu for Blues fans, having seen their side create enough chances to win the game but ultimately pay the price for errors at the other end.
