ASHMAN AT THE DOUBLE

Leon Ashman became the first Blues player to score more than one goal in a game this season as he netted twice in Leek Town's 2-2 draw at Romulus.

The result ended a run of four successive league defeats as was the least Leek deserved from an entertaining and end to end game.

Blues manager Neil Cox pulled a rabbit from the hat by unveiling new signing Anthony Malbon (pictured, below) in his starting line-up.

Despite information to the contrary the visitors lined up in an adventurous 3-5-2 formation with wing backs Matt Johnson and Paul Taylor taking every opportunity to get forward.

Leek dominated the opening half hour and the Romulus keeper made three excellent saves to deny Wayne Corden, Anthony Malbon and Jamie Haynes.

Stuart Heeps had made one good save but had no chance with the opening goal on the half hour. Carl Allen gave away a needless penalty with a clumsy challenge and Marcus Brown sent Heeps the wrong way form the spot.

Two minutes before half-time Blues were level in a similar fashion. Leon Ashman chased a lost cause and with the ball seeemingly running out of play he was inexplicably barged over by the goalkeeper.

Ashman took the penalty himself (pictured, above) and slotted cooly into the corner sending the keeper the wrong way to keep us his 100% record from the spot for the club.

Five minutes after the break Blues went in front when Ashman rose at the far post to head home Matt Johnson's cross.

This spurred on the home side to their best period of the game and they scored a great equaliser when Ashley Jackson ran from the half-way line and let fly with an unstoppable shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Their were chances at both ends to win it as the game wore on, with Blues best efforts being a Wayne Corden free-kick that was well saved and a Dan Cope header, his first touch after coming on, which dropped just wide of the post.

Overall a good game, a better showing from the Blues, a point on the board and the promise of still better to come with Malbon up front.
