BLUES PASS BLOODS TEST

Blues battled through brutal conditions at Droylsden to win a third successive league game for the first time this season with a 3-2 victory.

The match was played with freezing, driving rain being blown across the sodden pitch by a strong wind but despite this both sides tried to play their football and served up an entertaining game for the brave souls watching.

Neil Baker named the same side that started the abandoned game against Colwyn Bay last weekend but he was able to welcome back Charlie Walford and Scott Lycett from injury to take their place on a high quality subs bench.

Jordan Johnson went close on 8 minutes when his dipping 22-yard free-kick was pushed over the crossbar by Bloods keeper Chris Thompson.

Town went ahead in the 11th minute when Niall Maguire played a lovely ball through to Tim Grice to put him one on one with the keeper.

Thompson managed to block the first effort but the ball rebounded back to Grice (pictured, above) who slotted it past him at the second attempt.

Droylsden's first sight of the Leek goal came on 20 minutes when a goalmouth scramble saw two close range shots blocked.

Play immediately swung to the other end when Rob Stevenson broke clear but his attempted curler was pushed away by Thompson.

The home keeper was in action again four minutes later when he dived at full stretch to keep out another Grice effort.

Four minutes before the break, a great advantage played by the ref allowed the ball to find Stevenson down the middle, bit his low shot was deflected just wide.

Just before half-time, Blues fell foul of the sucker punch when a well-worked break down the left saw the ball cut back from the by-line for Liam Caddick to tuck home from close range.

Nine minutes into the second half, Leek were behind when Niall Green was adjudged to have committed a foul in the area and Sefton Gonzales made no mistake from the spot.

A minute later the scores were level. Stevenson crossed low from the right and Johnson slid the ball home low under Thompson.

Amazingly, two minutes later Blues were in front with a penalty of their own which Grice dispatched to the keepers right despite Thompson getting his fingertips to it.

Strangely after the flurry of goals there was little in the way of goalmouth action after that at either end as Blues defence held firm to claim the victory.

Baker will however be concerned to have seen Jessy Bavanganga stretchered off and then Rob Stevenson and Tim Grice both limp off injured towards the end of the game.

The players sitting on the bench may well be needed next Saturday against Skelmersdale United, but for now this was a massive three points and a real show of character to come from behind to win a game in such atrocious conditions.
