CASSWELL LOOKING FOR SUCCESS ON ALL FRONTS

Lee Casswell says growing cup commitments won’t deflect his focus from the job of leading the club to promotion this season reports The Sentinel.

Casswell’s men progressed into the last eight of the Evo-Stik Doodson Sport Cup last night with a 3-0 victory at Sutton Coldfield Town.

They have also reached the quarter-finals of the Staffs FA Senior Cup where they will take on Chasetown at Harrison Park next Wednesday night.

Blues eased their way into the last play-off place in the Evo-Stik Division One South at the weekend with a 4-1 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Mickleover Sports, but still have games in hand over all the teams above them.

Leek make a return visit to league leaders Sutton Coldfield Town for a league game on Saturday, with a massive eight games in hand over the Central Ground outfit and local rivals Newcastle Town, who are sitting second in the table.

Casswell says in spite of a busy league programme ahead, he’s still targeting success in the cup competitions.

“My priority is to get this club into the Premier Division, whether it be as champions or through the play-offs, but I would also like to do well in the cup competitions,” said the manager.

“Besides you ask any player and they would rather be playing games than training, so Tuesday night’s game served its purpose. We progressed in a cup competition and the players had a good run-out.”

And although Casswell does not have a big squad to work with, he believes it is good enough to bring the club success this season.

Blues just missed out on promotion last year when they lost to Belper Town in the play-off semi-finals.

However, he believes the squad is stronger this season and is capable of reaching their goal.

“We have quality in the squad which is important when you are looking to win things.

“I’ve always said if we don’t concede, then we will win games because there are plenty of goals in the team,” said Casswell.

“Dan Shelley and Jordan Johnson have both come back into the team and are playing really well and will always be a threat with their ability to score."

Defender Karl Espley was forced off with a slight knock, but he won’t be available for the league game at Sutton Coldfield on Saturday anyway following his red card in the derby match against Kidsgrove Athletic earlier this month when he conceded a penalty.

Midfielder Sam Hall, who has only just returned to the team following injury, was also forced off after a clash of his heads which left him nursing a ‘duck egg’.

However, manager Casswell expects him to be available for the weekend.
