The Staffordshire Football Association has recognised the hard work and dedication of Leek Town Chairman Andrew Wain by awarding him their coveted Long Service Award.

Mr Wain (pictured) will be presented with his award ahead of the Staffordshire Senior Cup Final between Kidsgrove Athletic and Stoke City which will be staged at Harrison Park on Wednesday evening, 7.45pm.

The Wain family history contains a large chunk of Leek Town involvement after his grandparents became members of the club as we know it from its formation after World War Two.

His grandparents were committee members in those early days with his grandmother running the ‘refreshment hut’ whilst his grandfather was the club’s groundsman.

He was introduced to football in general and Leek Town in particular almost from birth when his grandmother, Winnie Wain, would push him down to the match in his pram.

Later he would be taken to the game by his former teacher Mike Rowley who was the club secretary, a role his father, Brian, now occupies.

In his youth, Andrew was a useful goalkeeper/defender turning out for his school - Trentham High - he also represented the City of Stoke on Trent Schoolboys.

When he left school he went on to play for Staffordshire Police, Redgate Clayton and Leek CSOB.

After being a life-long Leek supporter, during which he sold programmes on match days, Andrew took up his first official post as a ground steward in 1991.

In 1998 he was promoted to Chief Steward and a year later became the club’s first Safety Officer after being awarded an NVQ in Crowd Safety.

Andrew went on to be elected to Leek’s Board of Directors in 2000 and such was his drive and initiative he was promoted to Chairman eight years later, a position he still holds today.

In addition to his duties as Club Chairman, Andrew is a member of the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council Sports Council.

Twelve months ago he began the process of creating a community club at Leek Town with the Charter Standard award as his goal.

This project was so successful that the Staffordshire Football Association recommended that the club be awarded Charter Standard Development Club status shortly before Christmas.

However, the Chairman is not resting on his laurels and is now actively pursuing Charter Standard Community Club status within the next twelve months.

Andrew Wain is now a member of the Evo-Stik League Management Committee after being nominated and elected to the Northern Premier League Board of Directors earlier in the season.

Mr Wain is a dedicated football official - he drives projects through to a conclusion and puts his heart and soul into the club he has supported all his life and the award is therefore fully justified.
