For their first match in the New Year, the Leek girls travelled to Wolverhampton on Saturday to face Wyrley, one of the leagues most sporting teams.

From the whistle the Leek girls dominated the play and set the scene for the next 80- minutes. Wyrley are a strong and experienced side well-known to the Leek girls, who could not be complacent.

Aware of the challenge ahead, and having narrowly missed out to them earlier in the season, the Leek girls quickly built the pressure which resulted in striker Alanya Tezgel bagging the first goal within the first 3 minutes.

Wyrley responded immediately and after a Leek mistake in mid-field, outwitted their defence to equalise within the next 60 seconds making it 1-1. Leek defender Maddie Bragg was having none of this and hit-back with a fearless run along the wing and a conclusive fire at the goal; only to be saved by Wyrley.

The Leek girls were now really fired-up and a great run and skilful feet from a returning Sophie Walley saw a precision pass to Tezgel to make it 2-1 to Leek. Wyrley came back time-after-time but the Leek opening goalie Kirsten Washington remained focussed and saved all of their shots.

Bragg was still fired-up and and picked-up another good Leek pass to run the line and shoot from within the box with an amazing resulting display of gymnastics and a Wyrley save.

The Leek girls had to maintain the pressure against a determined Wyrley side and not long before half-time Tezgel was skilfully set-up for a decisive attack only to be tackled and brought to the ground.

The ref. was fair and the awarded free-kick from just outside of the box was skilfully taken by Leek mid-fielder Ellie Salt, but narrowly skimmed the top of the bar. Soon after, the half-time whistle blew.

HALF TIME : 2-1

From the re-start Leek decided this was to be their match, no questions ! It was also striker Amelia Whitehouse (the highest scorer in this seasons U16 Staffordshire Girls League)’s last match, having been scouted by Manchester City Womens Academy to join fellow Leek U16 player Tasia Brough, who was signed at the start of the season.

Within the first 60 seconds mid-fielder Salt picked-up the ball to send Tezgel who was by now inside the oppositions half, and powering-on, outwitted the Wyrley goalie to secure her hat-trick.

Positive team play, and skilful and determined contributions from an ever-dominating Bethany Jones, a fearless Caitlin Taffee and a focussed Lily Sweitek, supported by the dependable defence.

Constant tackling and attacks by the experienced Kiera Wells ensured Leek secured their advantage. Suddenly Wyrley hit-back resulting in a circus-style save by regular Leek goalie Izzy Dyer.

Goal-mouth frenzy time was next-up for the delight of spectators, and featured Tezgel, Salt and out-of-position defender Jenny Hesketh, as usual now on the scene, to set-up Leeks firy striker Abbie Sanders with her classic shot to make it 4-1.

Leek were on fire, and playing very enjoyable team-football indeed. The Northern Power-(White)house was not to be left-out on her last match for Leek and blasted though with a defining boot straight into the net.

Wyrley continued fighting and quite decisively ensured the Leek defence no rest. Whitehouse intercepted a Wyrley throw-in and passed to Tezgel who in-turn passed to Leek defender Bragg taking the ball the full length of the line to find Sanders and her second power-shot to conclude the result of 6-1.

Further decisive saves by Washington (Dyer now out in the mid-field and in true style causing trouble to the opposition) ensured Leek their concluding result.
