STEVENSON KEEPS THE DREAM ALIVE

6 months ago By Stevie R

Blues kept their play-off dreams alive by beating promotion rivals Stamford 1-0 at Harrison Park.

Neil Baker made three changes to the side that started at Cleethorpes bringing in new central defender Mat Bailey to replace the injured Darren Chadwick with Dan Shelley and Jordan Johnson were preferred to Nathan Whitehead and Tim Grice.

The Daniels came close in the opening moments with a shot that just went wide of the post, but rarely threatened again in a first half that Blues largely controlled without creating too many chances.

However, a good move in the 12th minute saw Dan Trickett-Smith presented with an opportunity but he fired over. Three minutes later Rob Stevenson saw his cross-shot hacked away from the goal-line by Henry Eze.

It remained goalless at half-time but Blues came after the break looking more purposeful and almost scored within a minute of the restart when Jordan Johnson got between two defenders to a through ball, but just couldn't get enough on his shot to really trouble the keeper.

Johnson then had another opportunity when the ball fell to him 12 yards out, but he shot into the side-netting.

On 63 minutes Danny Roberts was called into action when he made a fine save diving low to his right to keep out Kieran Wells powerful header from a corner.

The only goal came in the 67th minute when Stevenson took advantage of a mix-up in the Stamford defence to pick up a through ball between two defenders and then fire past the goalkeeper who decided to come charging out of his area and into the empty net.

Despite a flurry of substitutions The Daniels did not apply much pressure on the Blues goal with Scott Lycett dealing with the only moment of danger when he cleared away a dangerous cross-shot right in front of goal.

Lycett was named Man of the Match and he and defensive partner Mat Bailey certainly made Blues look a lot tighter at the back as Town beat a side from the top half of the table for the first time this season.
