THE WEATHER WINS OUT

The weather was the only winner as Blues match at Sheffield FC was abandoned after 55 minutes due to a water logged pitch.

Before that however both sides produced some decent football despite the constant heavy, driving rain and a soggy playing surface,

Lee Casswell was forced to shuffle his pack with Niall Green suspended and he named Ryan Grocott at left-back with James Curley coming in to partner Darren Chadwick in the centre of defence. Ant Danylyk's return in midfield meant Dan Shelley dropped to the bench.

Blues were slow out of the blocks and Mason Warren forced Chris Martin into a good save inside the opening minute.

Sheffield went ahead in the 5th minute when James Gregory broke away down the left and as he advanced into the area, he slotted the ball low past Martin and in off the far post.

Town almost equalised three minutes later when Lee Cropper got away down the left and hit a cross-shot that Tim Grice was just unable to turn in at the far post.

Leek gradually worked their way into the game with more of the possession and Chris Baker a constant threat down the left flank that the home side were finding difficult to contain.

The deserved equaliser came in the 31st minute when Niall Maguire (pictured, below) picked up the ball and hit a lovely low finish from just outside of the box into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

The scores were level at 1-1 at the break but upon the restart it immediately became apparent that the pitch had reached saturation point and the ball was holding up in places due to surface water.

The referee played on for ten minutes but decided enough was enough when a Sheffield player tried to make a run with the ball and ended up well in front of it as it stuck in the waterlogged pitch.

It was the right decision to abandon the match as was the decision to start the game as the pitch was quite playable in the opening half.
