BLUES BEATEN BY TWO LATE GOALS
Blues lost their penultimate pre-season friendly on Tuesday when National League North outfit Curzon Ashton ran out 2-0 winners.
The Leek squad was decimated with no fewer than seven regular players unavailable for various reasons but the squad was supplemented by the inclusion of five trialists.
Blues turned in a creditable performance and matched their higher league opposition blow for blow in the opening half although Curzon came close to opening the scoring in the 22nd minute when Paul Marshall crashed a shot onto the upright.
Leek responded with Grice dipping a lobbed shot inches over the crossbar and then Grice went close again on 27 minutes with the keeper tipping the ball wide.
Shortly before the break Grice raced into the box but his shot flew narrowly wide of the upright.
The visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and Blues found themselves with some defending to do and they held out until the 81st minute when Matt Crothers scrambled home from close range.
Curzon wrapped up the victory two minutes later when Crothers was again successful with a shot from the edge of the box.
