Leek remain 2 points behind leaders Sutton Coldfield after this thrilling 2-2 draw

Very good game between two teams who played good football. We pushed for the win in the later stages but either team could of won it so a draw is probably about right. I thought both teams were excellent today.
- Ian Smith, Manager

The early exchanges in this game were quite even with both sides playing good football.
Leek had a good chance 10 minutes in when Emily Boon supplied Rehanne Mellor with her resultant shot hitting the cross bar.

Game was very much end to end and both defences were forced to work hard against the opposition attack.

On 17 minutes a Jules Kendrick free kick found Laura Baskerville who back heeled a great pass into the path of Mellor who slotted the ball home to open the scoring for Leek.
On the next Sutton attack a great block from Naomi Sale - Hancock prevented a strike on the Leek goal.

A few minutes later and a good combination move from Sutton and the striker was in on goal and fired home for 1-1.

Again end to end football by both teams produced exciting football for the spectators.
Sutton Coldfield were then awarded a dubious penalty for what looked like a good tackle. The resultant spot kick saw the visitors go into the lead.

Virtually straight after the restart Leek attacked down the right and Baskerville hit a 30 yard shot which looped in over the keeper to level the score again at 2-2.

The final minutes of the half produced chances for both teams with Sutton also hitting the woodwork.

The second half started as the first ended with both teams looking to attack when possible. Kim Sheldon’s boundless energy in midfield was starting to tell as she became more and more influential on the game and linking up through the thirds of the pitch.

Leek applied the pressure and won a series of corners but couldn’t quite capitalise on them as Sutton defended well.

A Sutton breakaway then forced Leek keeper Hannah Austin into a good diving low level save.

65 minutes in and another good run down the left by Boon with a cross pulled back to Mellor in the box who went past two players but a third bravely blocked her shot on goal. Next it was Michaela Lockett coming in from the right hand side trying to work herself a shooting opportunity, she fed the ball into Baskerville who was offside.

Leek then won a free kick on the edge of the box and Katie Maya stepped up and produced a good strike and an equally good save by the Sutton keeper.

Sutton Coldfield then attacked and worked the ball through to their striker who got a great shot away which was excellently saved by Austin diving high to the right.

In the final minutes Leek looked for the winner and Mellor this time found Lockett and she got a shot away but just over the bar.

The next Leek attack and Katie Maya headed the ball on to Mellor and her shot went agonisingly wide.
