“Very good performance by all players in the squad today. We made lots of chances and possibly should of taken more than the 6. Just sorry I missed the wonder goal by Mollie as it was so quick after half time I was still coming down the tunnel. ”
Ian Smith, Ladies Manager
Leek Town were on the attack from the start with both Rehanne Mellor and Lacey-May Smith having good chances within the first two minutes with both firing wide of the target. Eleven minutes into the game and a Laura Baskerville cross found Mellor at the far post and she forced the ball over the line to open the scoring for Leek.
From the restart Jules Kendrick quickly won the ball back for Leek and set up another attack which resulted in a goalmouth scramble with the ball falling to Laura Baskerville with her back to goal she managed to turn and smash the ball into the net for Leek’s second goal.
The Atherstone centre forward was a threat and both Emma Smith and Charlotte Bromley were kept busy keeping her from getting through on goal. Charlie Awde then found Elise Skelding with a good pass and Skelding ran through on goal to beat the keeper for the third Leek goal. Leek were producing lots of chances with L Smith, Skelding and Mellor all coming close.
Just before half time Emily Boon picked up the ball on the left hand side and drove in firing the ball past the keeper for a well deserved fourth goal.

The first minute of the second half produced the best goal of the game when left back Mollie Shaw won the ball on the half way line and used her pace to run past 5 players and on getting to the opposing penalty area unleashed a thunderbolt shot into the top corner of the goal to make it 5-0
Atherstone heads did not go down and they did produce some good football with Leek keeper Hannah Austin being called into action to make a good save from one effort.
The best chance for Atherstone came on 65 minutes when the centre forward did get through but a last ditch tackle from Bromley prevented the shot.
Simone Kelsall made a good interception and found Kirsty Ryder who ran forward and supplied Michaela Lockett who had made what looked like a good timed run which was flagged offside.
L Smith also put the ball in the net twice but given offside both times.
Leek’s final goal came from a Naomi Sale-Hancock interception supplying Alice Painter down the wing and using her pace she got around the back of the defence and crossed the ball into the path of Mellor to slot home for her 2nd and Leek’s 6th goal.
Leek then had to defend a couple of corners and then in the last 5 minutes went onto the attack looking for more with the Atherstone defence and goalkeeper doing well to prevent this.
