SANDWELL LADIES 2 - 4 LEEK TOWN LADIES

LADIES MAKE IT 8 LEAGUE WINS OUT OF 8

3 more valuable away points against a good Sandwell Team who made us work hard.

Leek Town travelled to Sandwell for this West Midlands Regional Women’s League division 1 fixture and started well putting early pressure on Sandwell with both Chantelle Gallagher and Rehanne Mellor coming close in the opening minutes.

12 minutes in and Leek won a free kick and Lacey-May Smith beat the Sandwell keeper from 25 yards with a great strike to put Leek 1-0 up.

3 minutes later Rhian Morris ran through to meet a cross from Alice Painter and got a shot away but over the Sandwell crossbar.

Leek keeper Hannah Austin made a good save from a long range shot.

Another free kick for Leek this time taken by Gallagher which Looked a goal all the way but the keeper produced a good save.

Sandwell then played some good football and equalised to bring the score level.

On the 30 minute mark Mellor got a good shot away but again inches over the bar.
10 minutes later and Kirsty Ryder supplied Mellor again who this time got a shot away which seemed to hit the net just under the bar before being cleared but the ball was adjudged to have hit the crossbar.

Sandwell had two good moves just before half time the first was intercepted by Naomi Sale Hancock and the second by Leek’s other centre back Katie Maya.

Sandwell started the second half well and put the Leek defence under pressure and a ball across the Leek defence hit a Leek player and deflected into the Leek net to put Sandwell in front.

A good run and shot by Painter was then saved by the Sandwell keeper.

Jenny Hesketh, Bethany Cottrell and Jules Kendrick were then introduced by Leek.

Leek played some good football looking for the equaliser and it was Gallagher who found LM Smith who fired into the Sandwell net from an acute angle for her second goal.

On the next Leek attack left back Emma Smith had a good overlapping run down the wing before crossing the ball into the danger area which was met by Jenny Hesketh to put Leek back in front.

Chloe Brown made a great tackle to prevent a Sandwell forward getting a shot away.

The game now very competitive with both teams playing good football. Leek won another free kick which was delivered by LM Smith into the Sandwell 6 yard box to be met by Cottrell who scored a good headed goal to put Leek 4-2 in front.

The final minutes were played out with Leek securing the win.
