In line with the Leigh RUFC development plan, a working party has been pressing ahead with plans to relocate from the uncertainty of tenure on the holdings at Thames Ave, and purchase land closer to the main site.

The Thames Ave pitch is detached from the main site of the rugby club with no car parking or facilities/utilities. This has lead to valid concerns by local residents when the playing field was used to its full capacity.

The main site at the junction of Hand Lane and Broadwell Drive holds the club house with associated changing and showering facilities/utilities, a floodlit car park and training area, along with two adult rugby pitches. A further two pitches are located close by.

We intend to relocate from Thames Ave to a new site adjacent to the two existing playing pitches at Hand Lane.
This will result in the clubs facilities being in one location, enabling the clubhouse, pitches and the teams to be managed together.

A report has been commissioned by PSD Agronomy who have assessed the replacement site and has concluded that it can provide either a full size senior pitch or 3 smaller pitches. The replacement pitch would be designed to RFU standards with the associated levelling, drainage and sand slitting in place.
It would be a vast improvement on the existing pitch off Thames Avenue and will allow for additional utilisation.

Ultimately the project is recognised to deliver a significant benefit to Leigh RUFC and will strengthen our foothold in the area.

A planning application has been submitted to purchase the freehold of 1.9 hectares (4.7 acres) of land adjacent to the 2nd team pitch with the decision expected at the end of April.
