It was back to British Colleges League cup action for Leigh Genesis U18 College team on Wednesday.
Preston College away on 3g astroturf was the test with the reward being a semi final spot.
The black & yellows of Preston were the first to strike and took the lead on 15 minutes with a powerfull header from a corner. This triggered Genesis into action and a number of chances were created before debut player Rob Wills drove home a well deserved equaliser on 23 minutes. For much of the remaining first half the game was evenly balanced until disaster struck just before half time when a failure to clear effectively gave the home side a gift chance that was swept into the back of the net to give Preston a 2-1 half time lead.
A recharging team talk from Manager Alan Kershaw reset the stall. Within 5 minutes of the restart Genesis were awarded a penalty for hand ball that Tom Jackson despatched clinically. On 55 minutes Preston took the lead for the 3rd time when a clearance rebounded of a Genesis player to land a the feet of the Preston striker who scored despite the valiant attempts from keeper Josh Bagley. As both sides started to make changes and utilise their substitutes Genesis took the upper hand. Tom Jackson broke clear of the defence to finish in style to even up the game at 3-3 on 60 minutes. Genesis then delivered a massive phsycological blow by taking the lead for the first time when Rob Wills drew the advancing goalkeeper and slipped the ball past him. Within minutes Steven Leese had joined the attack and scooped the ball into the bottom corner of the net to put Genesis 5-3 up. As Preston tried everything to get back in the game a lightning couter attack was brilliantly finished off by Kevin Cain to wrap up the game at 6-3.
A superb squad effort with every player making a positive contribution to great win and securing a semi final place.
