Dear Secretary,

I am writing this letter on behalf of a Keighley RUFC player, 16-year-old Nathan Cubitt, who is currently being cared for in the Spinal Injuries Unit at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield after an accident in November which has consigned him to a wheelchair for the foreseeable future.

An accident at a scrum in an Under 17’s match on November 6, 2011 left Nathan with a broken neck and a seriously damaged spinal column. After weeks of treatment he still has no feeling in his lower limbs and only limited movement in his arms and none in his hands. The prognosis is that a serious degree of permanent incapacity seems inevitable and he has in fact been told that he will never walk again by his medical team.

The Rugby Football Union’s Injured Players Foundation has been quick to support Nathan and his family and that excellent back-up will continue for as long as it is needed. There will, however, be other needs going forward and to be able to meet them the Keighley Club, with advice from the RFU, has established a legal Trust to hold funds raised for Nathan’s benefit.

When the news of the accident first surfaced on the social networking sites, the groundswell of support from far and wide, nationally and internationally, at grass-roots and elite levels, was truly heart-warming and gave him a huge boost in his darkest hours.

Now we have reached a more practical stage and hopefully you will be able to help mirror that initial surge of goodwill with a tangible expression of kindness and support by way of a donation to the Nathan Cubitt Trust.

As you will appreciate, penning a letter of this sort is an extremely intimidating task in that so much depends on my ability to stir a positive response from you or your club. I sincerely hope that you will be able to empathise with both Nathan and the rugby folk who are trying to do their best for him by asking for your support.

Donations payable to “The Nathan Cubitt Trust” can be sent to Michael T. Greaves, Honorary Secretary, Keighley RUFC, Holmlea, Summerhill Lane, Steeton, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD20 6RX.

Alternatively, if you prefer, a simple credit/debit card process can be found at http://www.nathancubitt.co.uk

Please accept my thanks in advance on behalf of Nathan and his family and the Keighley club for any contribution you are able to make.

Yours sincerely,

Sam Griffin,

Chairman – Keighley RUFC.
