Leos 23 v West Park Leeds 10
Leos secure victory in local north leeds derby
One of the largest crowds of the season gathered at crag lane in glorious conditions for the local north Leeds derby.
Both sides were near full strength with West Park looking to extend their unbeaten run where they have not lost a league game since November ironically at the hands of Leos. This good run has made them strong title contenders for promotion to division one but this was a must win game for the men from the sycamores.
Following last Saturdays disappointing defeat at Bradford Salem Leos were able to welcome back a number of regulars and were able to take the field at virtual strength.
This once more was an excellent advert for Yorkshire division2 rugby played with great commitment and spirit between two well drilled and matched sides
Following a fairly even first 20 minutes it was scrum half Monty Wainwright who put Leos ahead with a well judged penalty This was soon followed by good work by Tim Fforde and Jordache Myerscough, allowing the ball to be quickly switched to the left, where winger Neal Liu who squeezed in at the corner.
West Park came back, with a penalty via fly half Chris Bailey - Gibbs, before taking the lead on half time, when powerful winger Luke Gamble, broke a tackle to score under the posts.
ht 8 - 10.
In the second half, another Monty Wainwright penalty restored Leos lead, before a powerful break from Danny Thompson, put fellow centre James Knibbs in at the corner. Late on West Park exerted some pressure, before fine defensive work forced a loose ball, which speed machine Neil Liu snapped up to go 70m for a sensational winning try for a final score 23-10
Leos on balance of the game deserved the victory which has inflicted a dint into the promotion prospects of west park.
Leos man of the match was awarded to Neal Liu.
