The Ladies 4th XI needed to win their top-of- the-table clash, at Saffron Walden on Saturday, in order to finish the season as League Champions.
The home side had other ideas & but for a crucial save from GK Charlie Warren & a goal-line clearance from joint 'Player of the Match' Jane Wareing, Letchworth could have been facing an uphill battle. Defending far too deeply, they handed the initiative to Walden but after the early scares, Letchworth mounted their first counter attack. Following a series of short corners, they took the lead from Haidee Castle's strike. A second goal minutes later, from Alison Adam's follow-up at another corner, took the wind out of Walden's sails. Their tempers frayed under Letchworth's bombardment & Haidee Castle was able to take advantage of Walden's disarray to score her second. Letchworth piled on the pressure again, after the half-time break, and Liz Small made no mistake at yet another short corner. Walden became increasingly frustrated, as the visitors refused to loosen the stranglehold, & Letchworth's other 'Player of the Match', Emily Tollafield, helped to up the pace, as older legs tired. Haidee Castle then scored her hat-trick goal before Rachael Broom beat the 'keeper, with a reverse stick shot, following a cross from the right. As the final whistle went, Letchworth were able to relax & celebrate their Champions title. Saffron Walden were deflated & convincingly beaten, in their only defeat of the season. Both teams will meet again in Div 5 next season, when Letchworth will be looking to consolidate their position, whilst their opponents will be out for revenge. The 4th XI squad can take heart from this season's performances & can be proud of their efforts & achievement.
