3s lose out to Division Champions

Letchworth III 1 West Herts IV 3

The Ladies 3rd XI hosted West Herts 4s on Saturday, in their last league game of the season. Top of the table and with promotion guaranteed, the visitors were aiming to finish champions.
For the first 25 minutes, it looked the other way round as Letchworth were in complete control of the match but unable to find that elusive first goal. Having stood firm, West Herts made the breakthrough, when too many Letchworth defenders chased the ball rather than marking their players. The visitors found a free player lose in the 'D' and she slid the ball over the goal line.

As the game entered the second half, Letchworth conceded an early penalty corner and, unfortunately, the first strike took a deflection into goal. Now two goals adrift, they faced an uphill task but as befits this team, they never gave up. Not surprisingly, they battled back with joint "Players of the Match" ZARA NORTHERN & CECILIA STRICKLAND exerting an influence on the game well above their young status. Their efforts were rewarded when a slick short corner routine was finished off by HAIDEE CASTLE.
However, with captain Sue Saunders now on the sidelines with a leg injury, Letchworth lost their potency and struggled to maintain the pressure. The visitors took advantage and added a third to their tally, earning a victory which sealed their championship winning season.
Although Letchworth finished their season with a loss, the scoreline did not reflect the amount of possession they had. They have played better teams than this during the season & come out with more rewarding results. Nevertheless, their team spirit & determination bodes well for their next league campaign.

In spite of this defeat, they squeezed past the 2nd XI, on goal difference, to finish as the Ladies' Top Team for this season - no more than they deserved!
